Elon in Control of Social Services Funding
Elon is cutting off Federal payments to Lutheran Social Services because they have “Lutheran” in the name.
Lutheran Social Services is one of the largest employers in South Dakota. Their services and operations include:
- Senior living facilities across the state.
- Child care
- Educational services
- Adoption services
- Runaway & Homeless Youth Services
- They work closely with Child Protection Services to get at risk children into safe environments
- Mental Health services
- Disaster Response services
- And much, much more.
They do not operate as a church. They provide services to everyone, regardless of religion, race or sexual orientation.
Similar organizations in several other states are also being cut off, because they have “lutheran” in their name.
Many organizations across the country have a religious designation in their name, though they operate secularly. No doubt Elon will go after all of them before it’s over with. I’m even concerned about accredited hospitals with names like Baptist Memorial Hospital and the like.
Cutting funding off from such organizations will deprive communities of needed services and cost countless thousands of jobs.
