Social Media Experiment
I seldom post anything political on my Facebook timeline because fights erupt amongst the commenters. Once in a while I’ll post something, though, but I include one or more links to provide the relevant facts.
The other day, I saw the above meme. As is, it’s deceptive. I was going to post it with a link that clarified the details. But at the last second, I impulsively decided to omit the link, and in lieu of the link and explanation, I posted the statement, “You get what you vote for”. That was my amateur version of a sociological field experiment. I wanted to see how people would react.
Oh My Gosh MAGAs were coming out of the woodwork dissecting the meme and fact checking. This was extraordinary. They are obviously capable of fact checking; so why in the world do they share so many memes that range from deceptive to outright lies?
The only answer: they are willfully ignorant because they are so determined to “Own the libs”. By the way, in a MAGA’s mind, anyone who doesn’t support Trump is a lib.
Now for the real story, what I didn’t add to my Facebook post:
The meme was made from a screenshot of the Wall Street Journal status at X.
The link that WSJ provided goes to a paywall, so I went looking for another source. This One is the best one I found, providing all the relevant details from the WSJ article. (Scroll down a little to see the part that starts with the Cammack story).
Cammack declared the confusion was due to fear-mongering by the left, but that wasn’t it at all. She was initially denied medical care because of the confusing wording of the bill, which had just come into effect. This has happened in other states which have passed similar laws. Medical facilities have found the new laws bewildering, not understanding which procedures are allowed and which are forbidden. Women have died.
In this case, Cammack was able to persuade the doctors to administer treatment, which surely saved her life. The details of the bill have since been clarified by regulators so that medical facilities know what they can and can’t do. Of course they are allowed to terminate life-threatening pregnancies. Now they know that.
Cammack does support abortions in pregnancies resulting from rape and incest, and when the mother’s life is at risk. Most pro-lifers do.
